This is a very historic return ride to the scene of the Kopuawhara rail tragedy of 1938. We begin in spectacular coastal scenery riding along the seaside before passing through the Mahanga wetlands and its abundant wild life. The track then gently winds up through native bush for several kilometres alongside the Kopuawhara stream. A short tunnel leads out across the Breath-taking 165m long Kopuawhara viaduct before arriving at the monument which commemorates the many who lost their lives one fateful night during the railway’s construction in 1938 Total distance 24 km
PLEASE NOTE. The start location for this ride is a one hour drive from Gisborne.
Standard Railbike: $130 per person
E Bike: $155 per person
We had a great experience of easy riding through a combination of great countryside and some excellent history of the railway in the region. Geoff our guide was excellent - knowledgeable, interesting and great company.

We had a fantastic morning doing the beach loop ride. We had a standard bike and our daughter went with Geoff on an e-bike. Our two guides/hosts Geoff and Cripp were so knowledgeable, friendly and safety conscious. The scenery was spectacular and this fun adventure was so well organised.
