Mahia Coast to Viaduct

This is a very historic return ride to the scene of the Kopuawhara rail tragedy of 1938. We begin in spectacular coastal scenery riding along the seaside before passing through the Mahanga wetlands and its abundant wild life. The track then gently winds up through native bush for several kilometres alongside the Kopuawhara stream. A short tunnel leads out across the Breath-taking 165m long Kopuawhara viaduct before arriving at the monument which commemorates the many who lost their lives one fateful night during the railway’s construction in 1938 Total distance 24 km.

Meet on Coop Road. Arrival (exact location) minutes prior to your departure time. Upon arrival, you will be given a safety and instruction briefing before setting off on your railbike adventure.
