Yes, you can! The beauty of our purpose-built railbikes is that it’s almost impossible to fall off. Two bicycles are joined together to form the unique ‘railbike’ allowing two people to ride side by side on the actual rail lines. You don’t need to steer or balance the railbike as it has especially designed guide wheels keep you on the track. Our railbikes are designed for your comfort and are available in a standard or e-bike model. This is a unique outdoor experience that makes the allure and freedom of cycling very accessible to people with any range of cycling ability.

If you exercise regularly i.e. an hours walk 3-4 times a week you will be fine on a standard bike, otherwise for a minimal effort experience, select the e-bike.

Mobile phone, your own water, morning tea and snacks, sturdy footwear (not jandals or flip flops), rainwear and or windbreaker, extra clothing to allow for adverse weather, sunblock, sunhat, and camera.

You will need your own transport, there is ample parking at the railbike departure locations.

Yes, all the railbike tours are guided. Each railbike tour requires two riders per booking. A local guide will journey with you on a separate railbike sharing stories that bring the people, history, culture of the beautiful East Coast to life.

Yes, we are open all-year round except on Christmas Day. However, if there is bad weather, all riders will get an email notification on the morning of the ride and are entitled to a full refund.

If the ride is cancelled by The Gisborne Railbike Adventure due to bad weather all riders will get an email notification on the morning of the ride and are entitled to a full refund.

Cancellations due to weather are fully refunded. All other cancellations must be submitted by email to gisborne@railbikes.nz

Yes, at approximately 60-minute intervals at the average 15 kph cruising speed.

Yes. All railbikes must be booked online or by phone by 9pm the day before. During the summer months booking as far in advance as possible is recommended to avoid disappointment.

We have designated stops along the way and our tour guides are available to take individual photos of you or your group on your railbike along the way.

Your railbike comes with large saddle seats, lights for the tunnels, camera tray, water bottle holder, carry bags (up to 5kg per rider), and communication bell.

Yes. Railbikes travel generally as a group for safety and you will be accompanied by one of our tour guides. Each railbike tour requires two riders.

Yes, these are guided tours and all railbikes must travel as a group, as per rail regulations.

The railbike is rated to carry 130kg per rider, there is no height restriction.  The minimum age for riders is 18 years old.

No, trains officially ceased operating in 2012 and the line is now for railbiking only.

Riding the railbike is very safe. No steering or balancing is required and because there are four wheels it is almost impossible to fall off.
